Power of Squarespace AI Features: Best Practices
Fully updated August 2026.
Squarespace’s AI is six separate tools in 2026, and knowing which is which saves you money. Design Intelligence is the umbrella name for the text tools that draft copy. Blueprint AI generates a whole starter site. Image Studio creates and edits images. Improve with AI, inside the SEO report, fills missing alt text and page descriptions. AI Visibility checks whether ChatGPT and Gemini mention your business at all. Beacon is a chat assistant, still in beta. Only two of them spend AI credits — AI Visibility and Image Studio. The text tools and Beacon spend none.
The rule I give every client: use it to get past the blank page, never to fill the page. Squarespace says much the same in its own guidance — don’t publish anything it generates that you wouldn’t have written yourself. Unedited AI copy is precisely what search engines are now built to skip past.
I’m Gediminas Vengrauskas, a Squarespace Circle Gold partner. I build only on Squarespace, so what follows is what these tools do on live sites: where they earn their place, where they cost you an enquiry, and what each one actually costs to run.
What AI features does Squarespace have in 2026?
Squarespace calls its content-generating features Design Intelligence, and runs them on models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Around them sit a site generator, an image tool, an AI-assisted SEO report, an AI-search tracker and the Beacon beta. Here’s each one, honestly.
1. Can Squarespace AI design a website for you?
It generates a starter site, not a finished one. Blueprint AI produces a complete first draft — pages, layout, colours, fonts, plus generated copy and images — from a few answers about your business. Three routes into it: the Blueprint AI Builder on the templates page, Blueprint AI Templates (type your topic into the template search and pick one of three AI-generated options), or Squarespace’s GPT inside ChatGPT.
What it doesn’t do is keep designing. Once the site exists you edit it in Fluid Engine, the drag-and-drop editor on version 7.1 — a layout grid, not an AI. Worth saying plainly, because it confuses people constantly: only the first draft is generated. The editor is manual.
Blueprint earns its place when you’re staring at an empty account. It’s a poor finish. Generated sites share the same tells — hero copy that could belong to any business, sections in a predictable order, images of nobody in particular. On a salon or a clinic those tells cost you the enquiry, because a visitor decides in about four seconds whether you look like the real thing.
What I’d do with it:
Answer the setup questions with real specifics — your town, your actual services, who you serve. The output only ever reflects the prompt.
Keep the structure, replace the substance. Every line of copy and every image should be yours before anyone sees the site.
Treat the generated images as placeholders with a deadline. Photographs of your actual space beat anything generated, and on a local business that’s the single biggest trust difference I see.
2. Is the Squarespace AI writing tool any good?
Good at first drafts, bad at final copy. The text tools take a prompt, or text you’ve already written, and hand back a draft you then edit. They work in text blocks, blog posts, product and video descriptions, discounts, course excerpts, email campaigns and project proposals.
Squarespace’s own warning is blunter than most agencies would put it: similar prompts can generate the same or similar content on someone else’s site. Two salons in the same town both prompting “friendly hair salon” get near-identical paragraphs. Identical copy neither ranks nor persuades.
How it works on a real build: use it to break the blank page on a service description, then rewrite with the specifics only the owner knows — the stylist’s name, the actual treatment, the actual parking situation. The AI supplies the shape. The owner supplies the evidence.
3. Does Squarespace AI help with SEO?
Yes, in one specific and genuinely useful place — and less than people expect everywhere else.
The useful place is Improve with AI, inside the SEO report. Create a Brand Identity first, open the SEO/AI Visibility panel, and the SEO Report section offers to scan your site, flag every page missing alt text or an SEO description, and suggest fills aligned to your business’s keywords. If your SEO Completion Score is already 100% the button doesn’t appear, because there is nothing to flag. It only works on Fluid Engine, version 7.1.
That is worth ten minutes of anyone’s time. Missing page descriptions are the most common SEO fault I find on sites I take over, and they are invisible until you look.
What is not AI, but gets credited to it: Squarespace generates and links your sitemap automatically, marks up blog posts and products with structured data by default, serves every site over SSL, and builds mobile-optimised pages. That is the platform doing its job, not intelligence.
Squarespace’s own AI-search guidance — updated 4 August 2026 — tells you to keep AI crawlers unblocked, structure content with clear headings, bullets and FAQ sections, write in natural language, and show real experience and credentials. Which is to say: ordinary good SEO. That is the honest answer to “how do I optimise for AI search”, and the longer version is in my Squarespace SEO guide.
4. What does Image Studio do?
Image Studio generates images from prompts and edits existing ones — colour treatment, background, then Edit with AI to keep going. It is one of only two features that spend AI credits. Occasionally it refuses a perfectly ordinary prompt because the content was flagged by mistake; retry and it usually goes through.
My honest position on generated imagery: fine for a texture, a background, an abstract. Not for anything a customer is meant to believe in. Nobody books a treatment from a photograph of a room that does not exist.
5. What is AI Visibility, and is it worth running?
AI Visibility is the most interesting of the set. It runs realistic customer questions through ChatGPT and Gemini, then reports whether your site was mentioned, where you appeared, and which competitors showed up when you did not. It generates the prompts for you, and you can edit, add or delete them. It lives in your dashboard — no third-party subscription.
Two caveats, both from Squarespace. It spends AI credits on every run. And it does not influence how ChatGPT ranks or recommends anyone — it measures your position, it does not move it. It is English-language markets only for now.
Worth running? Once, definitely — to find out whether you exist in an AI answer at all. Most local businesses discover they do not, and that a directory or a booking marketplace is being recommended in their place. That is an uncomfortable, useful, actionable fact.
6. What is Beacon?
Beacon is Squarespace’s AI chat assistant, rolling out slowly and still in beta — Squarespace’s own description is that its features are limited and it is not as polished as finished tools. You cannot request access; sites are added in waves. If yours has it, an icon appears top-right while you are editing. In beta it can change text and block layouts, create and edit products and discounts, summarise your analytics, and update site styles. It does not spend credits.
What do Squarespace AI credits actually cost?
Nobody explains this clearly, so here it is, as of August 2026:
Every site gets 10 starter credits. They do not renew once spent.
Basic plan: those 10 and nothing else — no monthly refill.
Core, Plus and Advanced: the 10 starter credits plus a monthly allowance that resets on your billing date. Unused credits do not roll over.
Only two tools spend credits: AI Visibility and Image Studio.
Beacon and the text tools spend nothing, on any plan.
You cannot buy credits separately. The only way to get more is to upgrade your plan.
The practical read: if AI Visibility is the feature you actually want, Basic will not sustain it. Check your balance in the SEO/AI Visibility panel — the chip beside the title shows credits, monthly limit and renewal date. Squarespace revises plan details regularly, so confirm the current terms before upgrading for this reason alone.
How should you actually use Squarespace AI?
Five steps, in the order I would take them on a client build.
Decide what the site is for. Bookings, enquiries, or sales — one primary job. No AI fixes a site that does not know its own purpose.
Let Blueprint AI rough out the structure if you are starting from nothing, then treat everything it wrote as placeholder.
Draft with the text tools; publish nothing unedited. Add prices, names, town, the thing you do differently.
Run Improve with AI on the SEO report, then edit every suggestion it gives you. A suggested description is a starting point, not a finished one.
Run AI Visibility once, then act on the gap — usually more first-hand content, clearer service pages, a real about page.
What Squarespace’s AI will not do for you
It will not give you a point of view, and a point of view is what converts. It does not know your prices, your best client, or the objection you hear on every enquiry call.
It will not build the trust layer either — real photographs, named people, honest specifics. That is the layer generated pages cannot fake, and the one search engines increasingly reward.
And it will not rescue a site with no strategy underneath it. If you want a second opinion on where yours stands, the free website check runs the technical basics in about a minute, or see what a full Squarespace build involves.
Frequently asked questions
Is Squarespace AI free?
The text tools and Beacon do not spend AI credits on any plan. AI Visibility and Image Studio do. Every site gets 10 non-renewing starter credits; Core, Plus and Advanced add a monthly allowance that resets each billing cycle. You cannot buy extra credits — only upgrade the plan.
Will Google penalise me for using Squarespace AI?
Not for using AI as such. Google’s systems target unhelpful, mass-produced content however it was made. Generated copy you have edited into something specific and genuinely useful is fine. A page of untouched generated text is the exact thing that gets ignored.
Does AI Visibility improve my ranking in ChatGPT?
No, and Squarespace says so directly: AI Visibility does not influence how ChatGPT ranks or recommends brands. It shows you where you stand so you can improve the site behind it.
Can Blueprint AI build a finished website?
It builds a complete starter site — structure, styles, generated copy and images — in a few minutes. Finished is a different thing. Every generated start I have taken over needed the copy and imagery replaced before it earned an enquiry.
Should a small local business bother with any of this?
Use the text tools to get unstuck, run Improve with AI on your SEO report, and run AI Visibility once for the reality check. Then spend the time you saved on photographs of your actual premises and clearer service pages. For a local business that ordering beats every AI feature on the list.
